My Journey To Calmness

Every day presents challenges and depending on our mindset in the moment that something unexpected arises, our responses aren’t always to embrace it with a welcoming smile.

For example, when I’m on my way to work in the morning, I tend to crank up the music, get in the “high speed” lane and ride that baby as far as I can.

My expectation is the flow will be uninterrupted while I’m there and my music helps to get my mind focused on what I may encounter during my workday. I admit, I become irritated when someone cuts me off only to drive 40 MPH, in MY lane. I’m sure you’ve been there…

Or how about when you’re entering a building or elevator and someone either runs to get ahead of you or doesn’t hold the door or doesn’t say thank you when you hold the door. What happened to, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?”

Things happen so here is how I am learning to embrace it all.

I’m all about Lavender. This fragrance is one of the most versatile of the essential oils, known for evoking an atmosphere of calm, relaxation and balance – physically and emotionally, but using it isn’t always convenient.

To remind myself of the benefits, I strategically spent time shopping for a low-cost table high enough on which to place the diffuser, essential oils, a picture of my mom and I, and my adult daughters. Under it I placed a cozy throw rug and blanket so I can wrap up in it when I feel the need to do so. This is where I can feel at peace in my home, read and focus on my new awareness of the benefits of Centering.

I have a few recommendations on how you can begin your wellness journey and embrace everything:

  • Smile more deliberately

  • Rather than dwell on mistakes, choose to view life as opportunities to learn from

  • Deep cleansing breaths

  • Practice spending a period of time being at peace in the silence

  • Try apps like Calm or Focus Keeper

  • Reflect and acknowledge your reasons to be thankful

  • Consider that people are generally good, unless they’ve presented as otherwise

  • Memorize scripture and keep it close to your heart at all times

  • Simply value yourself and practice positive self-love and self-esteem

  • Take walks to be one with nature

  • Paint, read, write, take a bubble bath – a special activity that makes you happy
