Know Your Worth, Then Add Tax

I experienced decades of corporate career advancement. Don’t get me wrong, I asked for more, on average, every two years. I wanted it to be very clear that I was capable and that I’m not one to sit back waiting to be noticed. Early in my career, I observed that those who silently waited, were often overlooked.
During the years when I was an introvert, I too was overlooked. It was assumed that I was happy in the position I had and I was for a while...until I wasn’t. Once I mastered the responsibilities of my position, I learned advocate for myself. That meant, I wanted to be challenged so that I could grow.
I never asked to be “promoted.” I asked for more responsibilities. Once received, I buckled down and gave myself a deadline of six months to learn everything possible about the added duties while creating a vision to exceed expectations. Within a few months, my salary was increased. I repeated this strategy numerous times through the years. Of course, I had a back up plan, had my salary not been increased. What I learned is that taking initiative, generally works in your favor. This requires initiating conversation followed by agreed action with the person who makes the decisions to promote you. It also helps when you have a good relationship and that person operates from a basis of integrity.
I see life similarly; professionally and personally. Living “fully,” to me, is synonymous with “growing forward.”
