It's Your Choice
As we adhere to the Coronavirus stay- at- home- orders worldwide, it’s clear that people are triggered by the unknown, causing actions ranging from disbelief, hoarding and fear to optimism and reliance upon faith.
Those of us with careers involving leadership of teams tend to focus on the skills and mindset associated with determining what is necessary to motivate, mentor and train others to ensure that tasks and projects continue to progress toward completion. Being accustomed to living in what is historically, a fast paced society, with increased demand for products, goods and services, we have seen competition vying for excellence pitted against one another. Clearly, there is a lot of emotion associated with competing. Long term mental toughness with inability to maintain focus on the next most important thing, can create stress for even the savviest employee. Sacrifice is a by product of competitive excellence and it can show up in the form of inability to sleep, lack of exercise or proper nutrition, strained relationships with others, etc. Many of us are accustomed to competitive excellence, as it just is…a part of everyday life.
Living with this mindset, allows us to accomplish a lot in relatively little time through bursts of productive energy. We live knowing the next “thing” is just over the horizon, therefore we are always ready for whatever it is. Long term expectations in the workplace, whether valid or implied, often cause employees to feel anxious, depressed or burned out. This type of unbalance is not natural and often goes against personal values, yet we often believe it is necessary to ensure career growth, receive a paycheck or to keep their job.
Life, that most of us have become accustomed to, has recently come to a screeching halt, and we find ourselves, in some cases, questioning how to utilize this new-found time, in ways other than overeating and Netflix. Argument can be made that ultimately, what we chose is directly related to the level of energy from which we as individuals choose to operate.
Given the uncertainty of the duration of the number of days we will be required to remain in our homes, I invite you to spend some of this time self-evaluating. Of importance, consider whether you are self lead or do you tend to respond to situations depending upon where life leads you? Just for a moment, imagine that you are a physician performing an annual exam on… yourself. If this were possible, what would the results of your growth mindset show? When analyzing your current self against the version of you which was present one year ago, taking into consideration a benchmark that the human mind is capable of constantly learning, what would your individual mindset growth ratio show? On a scale of one being kindergarten and 5 being college level, where are you ranked?
When evaluating the quality of your personal self- leadership, it is necessary to look inwardly to determine specifically and truthfully, what you see:
>Do you see limited growth in response to the beliefs you have about yourself or
>Do you see your life as one that is full of opportunities awaiting your arrival?
Right now, amid all that is going on in the universe, be encouraged to take some of your newly discovered free time to inspire yourself. Know that when life returns to a new normalcy, that you can show up with a level of confidence that depicts a much more fulfilled and intentional person who is truly worthy of the investment of all that it takes to live in ways which depict who you are at the core of your being. Amp up to move past internal beliefs that have prevented you from taking calculated risks to step out of your comfort zone. To do so may require that you “walk in faith, not by site” to shift the trajectory of your life. Each of us can be better than were the day we entered our homes seeking shelter from the adversarial Coronavirus. My hope is that each person reading this gains unprecedented clarity in ways never experienced before. Leadership of self in what may be a new world, yet to be seen, is surely on the horizon. My sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones during this time.
